Nice garniture of two large (26 cm) vases and two large (30 cm) dishes decorated in Dutch Gouda style. The set was produced between 1974 and 1980 by Flora Keramiek in Gouda, the Netherlands. The leaf and flowers decorations - in different shades of brown, blue, and grey - were applied by hand by means of transfer prints. The edges of the vases and dishes are painted black and brown by hand. The pieces have a matte glaze finish. The vases have an identical decoration on the front and the backside.
The bottom of the vases is signed with a printed Flora Gouda mark (the word "plateel" is the generic Dutch name for painted earthenware), and the classifications "Holland" and "Handwerk" (made by hand). They are also signed with a handpainted model number (437). One of the vases still has a factory sticker which states "Flora Keramiek" (Flora Ceramics), "origineel" (original) and "Gouda Holland" (see pictures). The dishes have the same printed Flora Gouda mark as the vases, and a handpainted model / size number (30). The dishes have two holes trough their footring with a wire to hang them on a wall.
This is a very nice and affordable set of Gouda vases in a style that was quite popular during the seventies and eighties in the Netherlands. The pieces will look great as a mantel piece or as a large cabinet set. The dishes can be used as wall dishes, or be put upright in a plate holder. The two (perspex) plate holders as seen in the pictures will be included. The dishes can also be used as a fruit dish / centre piece on a table (see pictures).

About Plateelbakkerij Flora (Flora Keramiek):
Plateelbakkerij Flora was started in 1945 in Gouda after WWII ended. The owner and founder Mr. F. Eikenboom had already been involved in producing plateel (painted earthenware) in Gouda since 1927. He designed most models and decorations until the mid '60s, when his son gradually took over from him. Initially the factory produced mainly vases, bowls and ashtrays, later to be supplemented with various types of tableware / dishes. Most often the pieces were given a matte glaze finish.
In 1974 the factory was sold, and production was transferred in 1980 from Gouda to a newly build factory in Hardenberg, in the East of Holland. In this new modern factory, production was mainly done by transfer print, while in the old factory still many pieces were (at least partly) still handpainted.
During the '80s the new factory decided to focus on modern design ceramics, producing for example vases and candle holders of famed Dutch designers like Floris Meydam. In 1989 the factory was acquired by Goedewaagen (www.goedewaagen.nl), who continued production in Hardenberg until 1994. Goedewaagen still continued production of ceramics under the Flora name in its own factory in Nieuw-Buinen until 1996, after which production ended.

Broken ceramics is a thing we do not like! Not only is it a waste of time and money, but it also (often) means the end for a rare and unique item, which was treasured and cared for by their previous owners. So we really want to avoid any damages during shipping!
We have lots of experience of shipping ceramics, and we have seen what works and what does not work to protect ceramics during transit. If we ship multiple items in one package, each item is carefully wrapped and kept well seperated from the other items. We use large boxes, with plenty of buffer all around the items, so the packages can withstand a lot of abuse. All our packages should be able to cope with a 1,5 m drop without the items getting damaged.
Yes we do. We re-use packaging materials as much as possible, which means we rarely need to buy new materials for our packaging. Only foam peanuts are sometimes bought by us, in which case we prefer to use green starch based peanuts which are fully biodegradable, non-toxic and water-soluble.
Each year, we calculate the greenhouse gas emissions in CO2-equivalents caused by our shipping. We multiply that amount by 200% and then offset it in certified CO2 compensation projects based on tree planting / reforestation in various parts of the world. So far, we have offset 35,5 tonnes of CO2 emissions in projects in Bolivia and Borneo (Indonesia). See https://treesforall.nl/en/projects/ for more information on the projects.
First of all, don't let them fall! Always handle them in a mindful way and put them in spots where they cannot be accidentally bumped over when cleaning or vacuuming. Some people put some (clean) sand in vases to make them more stable.
Second, don't clean them too often! Underglaze painted Gouda and Delftware can be perfectly cleaned with water if necessary, but often just dusting them off or polishing them up a bit with a soft dry cloth is enough. Overglaze painted items should not be cleaned too often.
The colours of ceramics do not fade in sunlight, so you can put them in bright spots where they look good. But do avoid large temperature differences, which will cause increased crazing in many Delftware and also Gouda type pieces.
