Large blue and white transferware porcelain garniture set with dragon handles

$195.34

Shipping to United States: $56.16

Large (36,5 cm high) blue-and-white transferware garniture set consisting of one lidded vase with two beaker vases. The vases have a panelled, chinoiserie style flower decoration and stylised dragon shaped handles.

The vases are decorated with blue transfer prints which were applied by hand. The vases have on their body eight elongated panels with potted chrysanthemum and peony plants in bloom. The panels are bordered above and below by lotus petals, which encircle the shoulders and the base of the vase. The neck of the vases features eight smaller panels with elongated flowering branches. The outer and inner rim of the beaker vases feature ribbons with geometric patterns. All vases have two stylised dragon shaped handles, which were painted by hand. The lid of the covered vase has a rounded, two-tiered finial (also hand painted) encircled by eight lotus petals and eight small panels filled with small flowering branches.

The vases have a rounded relief which closely follows the structure of the panels and accentuates the decoration.

The vases are marked at the base only with an impressed model number, 1534 for the beaker vases and 1535 for the covered vase. This style of marking with large digits is typical for German made vases, so these vases were most likely made in Germany, most probably somewhere between 1890 and 1940.

We have seen these vases identified online as made by Mosa in Maastricht, the Netherlands, which is a factory that produced similar transferware porcelain vases during the same period. But to our knowledge Mosa never used this kind of large digit marks.

On the base of one of the beaker vases two tiny blue marks can be found, which at first sight look like two paint splatters, but upon close combination seem to be a tiny capital A and possibly a capital L, see the detail pictures.

Condition: the vases are in a very good condition, without any hairlines, cracks or damages. The only defect is a repair to the finial, which has been reglued to the lid. The repair is very well done, firm and practically invisible from the outside (see the detail pictures). However it should be mentioned here and the price of the set has been adjusted for this. Aside from this, there are no other defects. Two small glaze irregularities (protrusions) can be found on the vases (one on the lid and one on the shoulder of one of the beaker vases, see the detail pictures). These kinds of glazing irregularities are often found on these kinds of vases and should not be considered a defect.

A very decorative transferware vase set with handpainted details. Great for decoration, but they can also be used (with care) as actual flower vases. This set will look great in a variety of interiors, from classic to modern.

About transferware:

During the 19th century a new method of ceramic decoration became popular: transfer prints. The method was first developed in England and involved printing a monochrome design (from an engraved copper or steel plate) first on paper and then transferring it by pressing it onto the ceramic piece. This transfer process was done by hand.

Although transfer printed items lack the vibrancy and originality of handpainted items, the process does allow for the production of beautiful, detailed and decorative items, which would be very expensive or impossible to produce by hand painting.

How do you pack your items, will my item arrive safely?

Broken ceramics is a thing we do not like! Not only is it a waste of time and money, but it also (often) means the end for a rare and unique item, which was treasured and cared for by their previous owners. So we really want to avoid any damages during shipping!
We have lots of experience of shipping ceramics, and we have seen what works and what does not work to protect ceramics during transit. If we ship multiple items in one package, each item is carefully wrapped and kept well seperated from the other items. We use large boxes, with plenty of buffer all around the items, so the packages can withstand a lot of abuse. All our packages should be able to cope with a 1,5 m drop without the items getting damaged.

Do you take care of the environment?

Yes we do. We re-use packaging materials as much as possible, which means we rarely need to buy new materials for our packaging. Only foam peanuts are sometimes bought by us, in which case we prefer to use green starch based peanuts which are fully biodegradable, non-toxic and water-soluble.
Each year, we calculate the greenhouse gas emissions in CO2-equivalents caused by our shipping. We multiply that amount by 200% and then offset it in certified CO2 compensation projects based on tree planting / reforestation in various parts of the world. So far, we have offset 35,5 tonnes of CO2 emissions in projects in Bolivia and Borneo (Indonesia). See https://treesforall.nl/en/projects/ for more information on the projects.

How should I take care of my Dutch ceramics?

First of all, don't let them fall! Always handle them in a mindful way and put them in spots where they cannot be accidentally bumped over when cleaning or vacuuming. Some people put some (clean) sand in vases to make them more stable.
Second, don't clean them too often! Underglaze painted Gouda and Delftware can be perfectly cleaned with water if necessary, but often just dusting them off or polishing them up a bit with a soft dry cloth is enough. Overglaze painted items should not be cleaned too often.
The colours of ceramics do not fade in sunlight, so you can put them in bright spots where they look good. But do avoid large temperature differences, which will cause increased crazing in many Delftware and also Gouda type pieces.
