De Porceleyne Fles Delft medium sized handpainted polychrome garniture set

Beautiful handpainted polychrome Delft garniture set made by De Porceleyne Fles in Delft, the Netherlands. The set features a medium to large (30,0 x 17,2 cm) covered vase, produced in 1994, with two matching beaker vases (20,5 x 13,5 cm), produced in 1998. Although the beaker vases were produced in a different year than the covered vase, they were painted by the same painter and they match each other perfectly.

The model of this garniture set is called "Pompoen" ("Pumpkin") by De Porceleyne Fles, as it is characterised by round shapes. The vases are painted underglaze in polychrome style using red, green, yellow, blue and black colours. Each vase has a decoration of a fantasy garden with Delft style flowers which continues from the front side towards the back. The design of the covered vase also includes some insects and a small floral ornament on the backside. The vases are elegantly painted, in the high quality that De Porceleyne Fles is known for. The red colour is thickly applied, as is usual for De Porceleyne Fles. This is most likely done to prevent this sensitive colour from burning during the firing process. It also adds some relief to the painting, which looks very nice.

The vases are signed underneath with a handpainted Porceleyne Fles Delft mark, the model number (covered vase: P93, both beaker vases: 3022) and the year code (covered vase: DN = 1994, both beaker vases: DS = 1998). All vases have the same painter's signature JBL, which is the signature of Mr. J.R. Blom who worked from 1973 till at least 2013 as a painter at De Porceleyne Fles. The lid of the covered vase has also on its inside a model number (P093) and a painter's signature: M.Fr., which is the signature of Ms. M.H.C. Fransen who worked from 1964 till at least 2013 at De Porceleyne Fles. All three vases have a blue with silver water-resistant "Porceleyne Fles" sticker from the factory shop.

Condition: The vases are in an excellent condition, as new, except for one of the beaker vases, which has a small hairline on one of its corner edges (see detail pictures). The line is almost invisible from the outside, but can be noticed when seen under bright light from the inside or above. The price of the set has been adjusted for this defect. Aside from this, the set is as new. There is no visible wear to the glaze, which has a beautiful gloss. There is no crazing of the glaze. The inside of the vases is clean, as new.

About De Porceleyne Fles:

De Porceleyne Fles (also known as Royal Delft) is the most renowned Delftware factory in the Netherlands that still produces handpainted Delftware today. It is the only remaining factory of the 32 earthenware factories that were established in Delft during the 17th century. Founded in 1653, it has been active without interruption for over 365 years.

The quality of the painting of De Porceleyne Fles (PF) Delftware is very high, with painters receiving many years of training before they can start painting the designs. It takes no less than ten years of training / experience to become a 'master painter', who paint the more complicated designs and landscapes / sceneries.

De Porceleyne Fles produces Delftware in a variety of styles, which include beside the well-known blue and white (Delft blue) style amongst others a polychrome style, an imari style (Pijnacker), a green style (Delvert) and a 'famille Noire' style (Black Delft). A characteristic of the glaze used by PF is that it tends to craze with age a bit more than compared with other Delftware producers. So older items of PF are virtually always crazed to some extent, which does add charm to the object and should not be considered a defect.

Besides the traditional (and expensive) handpainted Delftware PF nowadays also produces more modern and affordable lines of Delftware whereby the decoration is put onto the product by hand by means of a screenprinted transfer. These products are then called "handmade" instead of "handpainted".
