Beautiful medium to large sized (30,4 cm diameter) Delft wall plate made by Plateelbakkerij Ram in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The plate is handpainted underglaze in Delft blue style and features a display of Delft style flowers with an insect. The contoured edge is elegantly decorated with ornaments. The painting is of excellent quality.
The plate is signed at the backside with a handpainted "Ram" mark, which in this form was used after 1935. There are also the classifications "Delfts Blauw" (Delft Blue) and "Made in Holland". The prominent underlined "E" on top of the mark can be either a painter's signature, a model / decoration code or a year code. The small marks on the lower side of the mark (below "Made in Holland") could perhaps also be a painter's signature (SD SD) or maybe just some ornamentation.
The plate has two holes in its footring with a metal wire through it to hang it on a wall.
Condition: excellent. There are no damages, cracks or hairlines and there is no visible wear to the glaze. The glaze shows a very light crazing, which is normal for Delftware of this age and just adds charm to the piece. The glaze has a beautiful gloss. There are three stilt marks visible on the back, which are marks from the stilts where the plate was resting upon when it was fired in the oven. This is a normal production artefact of artisanal plates such as these and should not be considered a defect.
A rare and very beautiful Delft plate of very high quality. A great item for the true Delftware collector.

About Ram:
Plateelbakkerij Ram was a pottery founded in 1921 in Arnhem, in the east of the Netherlands. One of the founders was the well-known architect, designer and ceramist Theo Colenbrander, who by then was already 80 years old and had worked previously as a designer and artistic director at the famous art pottery Rozenburg in The Hague.
In the first few years Ram (named after the Aries constellation) produced only art pottery designed by Colenbrander. From 1925 onwards the production was supplemented with more mainstream pottery and tiles. Production of Colenbrander designs ceased in 1928 because of the old age of the designer. During the 1930s and 1940s the company went through several bankruptcies, but each time was restarted. Production continued with about 10 to 15 painters employed during the 1960s. In 1969 the factory was closed.
Ram produced good quality Delftware, in blue and white, polychrome and red and white styles. The quality of the handpainting was good, comparable with that of De Porceleyne Fles.
More information about the Ram pottery can be found here (in Dutch): https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plateelbakkerij_Ram.

Broken ceramics is a thing we do not like! Not only is it a waste of time and money, but it also (often) means the end for a rare and unique item, which was treasured and cared for by their previous owners. So we really want to avoid any damages during shipping!
We have lots of experience of shipping ceramics, and we have seen what works and what does not work to protect ceramics during transit. If we ship multiple items in one package, each item is carefully wrapped and kept well seperated from the other items. We use large boxes, with plenty of buffer all around the items, so the packages can withstand a lot of abuse. All our packages should be able to cope with a 1,5 m drop without the items getting damaged.
Yes we do. We re-use packaging materials as much as possible, which means we rarely need to buy new materials for our packaging. Only foam peanuts are sometimes bought by us, in which case we prefer to use green starch based peanuts which are fully biodegradable, non-toxic and water-soluble.
Each year, we calculate the greenhouse gas emissions in CO2-equivalents caused by our shipping. We multiply that amount by 200% and then offset it in certified CO2 compensation projects based on tree planting / reforestation in various parts of the world. So far, we have offset 35,5 tonnes of CO2 emissions in projects in Bolivia and Borneo (Indonesia). See https://treesforall.nl/en/projects/ for more information on the projects.
First of all, don't let them fall! Always handle them in a mindful way and put them in spots where they cannot be accidentally bumped over when cleaning or vacuuming. Some people put some (clean) sand in vases to make them more stable.
Second, don't clean them too often! Underglaze painted Gouda and Delftware can be perfectly cleaned with water if necessary, but often just dusting them off or polishing them up a bit with a soft dry cloth is enough. Overglaze painted items should not be cleaned too often.
The colours of ceramics do not fade in sunlight, so you can put them in bright spots where they look good. But do avoid large temperature differences, which will cause increased crazing in many Delftware and also Gouda type pieces.
