Unique indoor planter handpainted in green Delft style by Aad van den Ende in Delft, the Netherlands. The planter is painted underglaze in an interesting grey/green/bluish colour, somewhat similar to the green/bluish colour of the Delvert items of De Porceleyne Fles. The foot and upper rim are decorated with elegant, art-nouveau style flower ornaments, while the centre body of the planter has a combination of a classic Delft "parsley leave decor"(peterselie decor in Dutch) with slightly art-nouveau style flowers.
The planter is signed underneath with a "Green Jewel Ceramiek" mark which was often used by Aad van den Ende for items he sold in local Delft shops. The mark has many variations, most often it looks similar to a De Porceleyne Fles mark, with an intertwined JC (which stands for “Jewel Ceramiek”) similar to the intertwined JT mark of De Porceleyne Fles, and a cursive written "Delft". In place of the bottle symbol of De Porceleyne Fles, van den Ende uses a hat-like symbol, sometimes with a crown above it. On this planter van den Ende has used the full name "Jewel Ceramiek" and the crowned version of the hat symbol. To the left of the mark is written a model and/or colour code "BLP 4575" and to the right we find van den Ende's painter's signature (a combination of a C and an E).
Aad van den Ende (1948-2008) was a so called 'home painter' (thuisschilder in Dutch) who painted Delftware at home and fired it in his own small electric oven, independent of the large ceramic factories or potteries. Previously he had worked as a painter at De Porceleyne Fles in Delft. He sold his products mainly to local Delft shops. Aad van den Ende became an art teacher at a local high school in Delft and experimented specifically with green pigments for his products. He also made oil paintings and was befriended with Herman Sanders, one of the main designers and painters at De Porceleyne Fles (who also made oil paintings). It is known that a few times people from De Porceleyne Fles came to visit his small home atelier to have a look at the results of his green paint experiments.
Condition: average. The planter is generally in a good condition, but does have a hairline crack through part of the bottom and foot (see detail pictures). The crack does not affect the structural integrity of the planter. The glaze on the outside of the planter is in an excellent condition, without any visible wear or crazing and with a nice gloss. The inside of the planter does show some wear and crazing. There are also some dark spots on the bottom, which are not removable and seem to be glazing or firing artefacts.

Broken ceramics is a thing we do not like! Not only is it a waste of time and money, but it also (often) means the end for a rare and unique item, which was treasured and cared for by their previous owners. So we really want to avoid any damages during shipping!
We have lots of experience of shipping ceramics, and we have seen what works and what does not work to protect ceramics during transit. If we ship multiple items in one package, each item is carefully wrapped and kept well seperated from the other items. We use large boxes, with plenty of buffer all around the items, so the packages can withstand a lot of abuse. All our packages should be able to cope with a 1,5 m drop without the items getting damaged.
Yes we do. We re-use packaging materials as much as possible, which means we rarely need to buy new materials for our packaging. Only foam peanuts are sometimes bought by us, in which case we prefer to use green starch based peanuts which are fully biodegradable, non-toxic and water-soluble.
Each year, we calculate the greenhouse gas emissions in CO2-equivalents caused by our shipping. We multiply that amount by 200% and then offset it in certified CO2 compensation projects based on tree planting / reforestation in various parts of the world. So far, we have offset 35,5 tonnes of CO2 emissions in projects in Bolivia and Borneo (Indonesia). See https://treesforall.nl/en/projects/ for more information on the projects.
First of all, don't let them fall! Always handle them in a mindful way and put them in spots where they cannot be accidentally bumped over when cleaning or vacuuming. Some people put some (clean) sand in vases to make them more stable.
Second, don't clean them too often! Underglaze painted Gouda and Delftware can be perfectly cleaned with water if necessary, but often just dusting them off or polishing them up a bit with a soft dry cloth is enough. Overglaze painted items should not be cleaned too often.
The colours of ceramics do not fade in sunlight, so you can put them in bright spots where they look good. But do avoid large temperature differences, which will cause increased crazing in many Delftware and also Gouda type pieces.
